About Inside Story
In the Spring 2019 semester, a group of journalism students set out with a timely goal: to explore the criminal justice system in the United States. Students worked in teams to interview previously incarcerated individuals, tell their stories and bring scantly discussed criminal justice concerns into the public eye. Here, you'll find their work. All media, including photos, graphics and audio files, were obtained by students.
Inside Story is divided into two parts: Profile Stories and Think Pieces. The Profile Stories each detail the personal experiences, struggles and successes of returning citizens.
The Think Pieces tackle more widespread systemic issues such as mandatory sentencing, mental healthcare, post-prison programming, recidivism rates and comparative studies between U.S. prisons and those around the world.
